Dundee Urban Orchard - Print City - Graft

What: Print City – Print Festival Scotland – part of Dundee Design Festival

Join DUO at this year’s Dundee Design Festival and contribute to the Print City installation. Print City information can be found here. What follows is DUO’s official ‘blurb’ for the exhibition.

Graft

1. insert (a shoot or twig) as a graft

2. hard work

Dundee Urban Orchard is a socially engaged art project that reimagines Dundee as an Orchard City. Since 2013 DUO have planted 25 small-scale orchards across the city, working with hundreds of active citizens to do so.

For Print City, DUO will be grafting a series of 25 relief prints onto the existing Print City installation. The prints depict images of planting, pruning, harvesting and other forms of orchard celebration.

This process mirrors DUO’s wider engagement in Dundee; a form of political and environmental intervention that grafts an alternative vision of the city onto an existing urban rootstock.

Together we graft a more just, democratic and sustainable future.

Where: West Ward Works, Guthrie Street, DD1 5BR.

24th March 2017 – 6 – 7.30pm

Carolyn Steel

What: Public Lecture by Carolyn Steel, author of Hungry City: How Food Shapes our Lives

A fantastic opportunity to hear Carolyn Steel, internationally recognised writer, speaker and architect, talk about urban design, food and the future of sustainable cities.

How do you feed a city? The larger our cities grow, the further we get in mind and fact from our sources of sustenance. Yet the hidden costs of the industrial food systems that make this possible are destroying us and our planet. Food has shaped our bodies, homes, societies, cities, and landscapes in the past; now we need to harness that power for good. We already live in what one might call sitopia (from Greek sitos, food + topos, place). By recognising that fact, we can think and act through food to create a better, more sustainable world.

Where: Dalhousie Building, Lecture Theatre 1, Old Hawkhill, Dundee, DD1 5EN.

Intimate, moving and stunningly filmed by director Kalyanee Mam (of the Oscar-winning Inside Job), A River Changes Course vividly captures the profound interdependence between Cambodian river, forest and farm peoples and the foods they harvest. While moments of great beauty, grace and humour shine through, Mam witnesses the growing effects of debt, international land grabs and urbanisation on the families’ means of survival and happiness, finally begging both filmmaker and audience to break the silence and speak out from behind the screen.

A powerful reflection on the frontline impacts of our global food system, this mesmerizing film deservingly walked away with the Grand Jury Prize for World Documentary at Sundance.
